Glenn Miller Orchestra to Open Presidential Concert Series

Events, Music, News

The Lee University Presidential Concert Series’ 29th season will open with the legendary Glenn Miller Orchestra on Thursday, Sept. 2, at 7:30 p.m. in Pangle Hall.

“We are so excited to start this series with the Glenn Miller Orchestra,” said Darlia Conn, director of the Presidential Concert Series. “Of the many things we have missed as a result of the pandemic, live in-person performances and the Presidential Concerts are near the top of our list.”

The Glenn Miller Orchestra is the most popular and sought-after “big band” in the world. During the years of World War II and throughout the 1940’s, the original group popularized “Chattanooga Choo Choo,” “Moonlight Serenade,” and dozens of other swing and jazz favorites. The current edition of the Glenn Miller Orchestra travels with a full complement of 18 musicians, playing to sold-out crowds around the world each year.

The orchestra is musical, disciplined, and visually entertaining, having its own distinctive “sound.” This sound is created by the clarinet holding the melodic line, doubled or coupled with the tenor sax playing the same notes, and the harmonies produced by three other saxophones, accompanied by trombones and trumpets.

They have performed in all 50 United States, as well as throughout Australia, Europe, Guam, Iceland, Japan, New Zealand, the Philippines, and South and Central America.  They are “on the road” longer and more continuously th an any other orchestra in the world, covering over 100,000 miles a year and performing for audiences that add up to more than a half million people annually.

Tickets for the Presidential Concert are $15 for adults and $5 for students and seniors and are available for purchase at the Lee University Box Office in the Dixon Center or by contacting (423) 614-8343, between 3-6 p.m., beginning Aug. 26.

Lee University remains dedicated to the health and safety of both the campus community and guests. COVID-19 protocols will be observed based on CDC recommendations at the time of each performance. As of Wednesday, Aug. 11, masks are required when indoors on Lee’s campus.
