Community, History, Political Science, and Humanities, News

Ft. Hill Group 2022On Sunday, Oct. 29, Lee University will present the 17th Annual Walking Tour of Historic Fort Hill Cemetery.

The walking tours to the gravesites will be led by Lee University and Cleveland State student volunteers. Reenactors will introduce men and women who started civil organizations, including Ruth Aiken, Adelia and Goodman Austin, Mary Lucinda and Richard Edwards, Ellen and William Philip Lang, Elvira and James Robertson, Anna Lou and William Rodgers, Mary Ruth and Carl Speck, and Mollie and John Trunk.

The tours will feature Lee history majors who are completing their senior year capstone experience, which includes a public history project.  Students research the characters, write the tour guidebook, and dress in period costumes to bring to life the early residents and history of our community.

Sterling Kalnins, a senior history major from Huntsville, Alabama says, “The cemetery tour offers us a chance to hone our research skills, learn local history, and serve the community that has been our home for the last four years.”

Tours begin in the late afternoon at 4 p.m. A new group will start the tour every 15 minutes, with the last tour leaving shortly after 6 p.m. The cost is $5 per person and $2 for students.

Guests should park at Cleveland Christian Fellowship (695 South Ocoee Street) and ride the shuttle to and from the tour site. At the cemetery, guests will purchase tickets and brochures at the tents before joining a guided tour group. Tours last about 75 minutes.
