Lee University’s Drs. Karen Mundy-Judkins and Ben Judkins were recently published in the Interdisciplinary Journal of Best Practices in Global Development. The work is titled “The Transformation of High-Risk Youth: An Assessment of a Faith-Based Program in South Africa.”

The research is a review of faith-based programs, and the role that such programs have played in the reduction of youth violence and anomie, which is social instability resulting from a breakdown of standards and values. Their publication compares a secular program with its faith-based counterpart for Outward Bound South Africa (OBSA), an outdoor adventure education program designed for disadvantaged youth. The research was sponsored by Charles P. Stetson et al. of New York, the founding family of OBSA.

Mundy, professor of sociology, specializes in medical sociology and religion and society. Judkins, adjunct professor of sociology, specializes in race and ethnicity and program assessment. He is a past president of the North Carolina Sociological Association, and recipient of the North Carolina’s Distinguished Contribution to Sociology Award.
