On Friday, March 22, Lee’s Center for Responsible Citizenship (CRC) will host Dr. Zachary German, an assistant professor in the School of Civic and Economic Thought and Leadership at Arizona State University (ASU). German, a Lee political science alumnus, will speak on “Lincoln & America’s Civic Faith.”

This event is part of the CRC’s 2023-2024 theme, “Faith in the Public Square.” German’s talk will explore Abraham Lincoln’s use of moral and religious language as he worked to reestablish America’s commitment to the principles of the Declaration of Independence.

“It’s always good to have students come home, particularly when they have gone off to accomplish so much,” says Dr. Thomas Pope, professor of political science and CRC director. “German models the sort of person we hope that Lee graduates grow to become – intellectual excellence wedded with Christian character.  His work at ASU continues to impact the lives of students, continuing the mission of his alma mater.”

German’s lecture is open to the public, and members of the Cleveland community are encouraged to attend. The lecture will take place at 5 p.m. in the Humanities Building Lecture Hall (Room 104) on Lee’s campus.

Lee’s Center for Responsible Citizenship hosts interdisciplinary reading groups, lectures, workshops, and symposia to cultivate conversation about what the elements of a healthy community really are. “These conversations are essential in a time where political life is so frequently lacking patience, deliberation, and charity,” says Pope. “The CRC recasts political life as a framework of dialogue, mores, and institutions that help us understand what it means to pursue the good life, together.”
