Clark Named Tucker Scholar in Science and Math

News

Lee University senior mathematics major Jonathan Clark was recently named the 2014-15 Tucker Scholar in Natural Science and Mathematics.

Clark is a resident of Cleveland and a graduate of Walker Valley High School. He has earned a cumulative GPA of 3.87 while at Lee, granting him the Honors Scholarship. Clark tutors students in math, physics, and physical chemistry, and he is the treasurer of Lee Prime, Lee University’s official mathematics club.

While taking a research-based course here at Lee, Clark recently completed an article which is under review by Mathematical Association of America’s “Mathematics Magazine.” He devotes much of his time to independent research and studying to prepare for graduate school, where he plans to study applied mathematics, particularly theoretical physics.

“I am very grateful for the scholarship,” said Clark. “Because of it, I will be able to cover the cost of my Lee cross-cultural trip.”

The scholarship is awarded to a rising senior majoring in the field of natural science or mathematics. Candidates for the Tucker Scholarship are nominated by faculty and chosen based on outstanding academic achievement. Consideration is given to financial need, and priority is given to students who graduated from an East Tennessee high school.

The Tucker Foundation Scholarship was introduced in 2009 as part of an institutional initiative to enhance natural science and mathematics at Lee University. The $5,000 endowed scholarship was established by the Tucker Foundation of Chattanooga on behalf of Mr. and Mrs. Summerfield K. Johnston, Jr.
