Chamber Strings and Handbells to Present “Tango Love”
Lee University Chamber Strings and Lee U Handbells will perform a joint concert, “Tango Love,” on Tuesday, Nov. 8, at 7:30 p.m. in Pangle Hall.
“If you love to tango, the evening belongs to you,” said Xiaoqing Yu, Chamber Strings director and associate professor of violin at Lee. “The evening will feature Emma Segnini and Amanda Moran in the gorgeous and amusing art songs of ‘I Guess I Loved You,’ ‘Adagio,’ ‘Je Me Souviens (I Remember),’ and ‘Caruso.’”
“Tango Love” will also include compositions such as “Hungarian Rhapsody,” “Tango Mariana,” “La Sortija,” “La Paloma,” “Tangoed Tango,” and “Devil’s Tango.” A team of string students with a pianist and percussionists will present the compositions.
“Since the theme for this concert was established as ‘Tango Love,’ and there is a dearth of music in that genre arranged for handbells, we’ve picked up the ‘love’ part of that and will present a set of songs from Big Band, Broadway, and your church’s hymnal,” said Laud Vaught, director of Lee U Handbells. “We’ve had a great time preparing these arrangements as they contain a wide variety of sounds and playing techniques. I know the audience is going to enjoy it and might be a little surprised.”
Yu joined Lee in 2004 teaching violin, viola, and chamber music. For 24 years, he served as concertmaster of the Greenville Symphony and performed with the Glimmerglass Opera Orchestra, a 10-week annual summer opera festival in New York. Yu has also performed in numerous concert halls, including Carnegie Hall and the Lincoln Center, and was a member of the Brooklyn Philharmonic and American Chamber Orchestra.
Vaught currently serves as coordinator of the Phil Thomas Music Resource Center at Lee. He also teaches part-time and directs the university’s annual Summer Music Camp. He has been actively involved in music ministry since 1983 as a director of music for churches in Charlotte, Atlanta, Las Vegas, Cleveland, and currently at Temple Baptist Church in Chattanooga. Vaught is a graduate of the Lee (College) School of Music and the UT Knoxville School of Music.
Chamber Strings is a dynamic ensemble comprising the university’s finest violinists, violists, cellists, and bassists providing innovative programming for venues on
and off campus.
Lee U Handbells regularly plays in Liturgical Chapel each semester, participates in at least one concert each semester, and is featured in Classic Christmas every year.
