Lee University will welcome Dr. Paul A. Cantor on Friday, March 28, at 5:30 p.m. for a lecture titled, “Shakespeare’s Political Thought.” The event, hosted by Lee’s Department of History, Political Science and Humanities, will be held in the Johnson Lecture Hall in the Humanities Center on Parker Street.

Cantor’s lecture will consider Shakespeare’s insights on political life drawing from a variety of the bard’s works, while focusing on Shakespeare’s legacy in reference to modern political culture. Following the lecture, Cantor will lead a Q&A session.

“Dr. Cantor is both a preeminent scholar of Shakespeare and an astute observer of American culture and identity,” said Dr. Thomas Pope, assistant professor of political science at Lee. “His work on Shakespeare attempts to discern the advice that the bard offers for a society struggling to understand the newfound principles of liberalism. As a country founded upon these principles, Shakespeare has much to teach us about how to understand ourselves and our relationship to each other through politics.”

Cantor, a professor of English at the University of Virginia, has written extensively on literature and culture, having published two books and more than 20 articles on Shakespeare. His most recent book, “The Invisible Hand in Pop Culture,” was published last year by the University Press of Kentucky.

The event is sponsored by the Charles Koch Foundation, established in 1980 by Charles G. Koch in order to advance social progress and well-being through the study and advancement of economic freedom.
