Brown and Chambless Travel to Albuquerque

News

Dr. Kevin Brown, professor of English at Lee University, and Karen Chambless, a third-year English major, recently traveled to Albuquerque, N.M., to participate in the annual board meeting for Sigma Tau Delta, the international collegiate English honor society.

The board meeting took place from Sept. 11-13 and focused largely on planning the March 2015 Sigma Tau Delta convention, which Lee students will be attending to present creative and critical work.

Brown is the regent and Chambless is the student representative for Sigma Tau Delta’s Southern Region, which contains over 250 chapters. This is the first time that Lee University has been represented in either position.

“Having Lee represented at the national level of Sigma Tau Delta helps give us a voice in the organization, which helps our students,” said Brown. “By serving on the Service and Scholarships committees, I’m better able to share opportunities with our members.”

Lee University’s Sigma Tau Delta chapter, where Brown is a sponsor and Chambless is a social affairs chair, is one of the most active chapters in the region, hosting an annual symposium, organizing monthly events, and inducting new members every fall semester.

“I am honored to serve at both the local and international levels of Sigma Tau Delta,” said Chambless. “Attending the board meeting gave me the chance to see what’s happening within the society and to help with the planning for March’s international convention. I plan to represent Lee and the entire Southern Region to the best of my ability.”

Sigma Tau Delta, one of the largest members of the Association of College Honor Societies, was established in 1924 to confer distinction for high achievement in English language, literature, and writing. As an honor society for students at four-year colleges and universities, it is run by an Executive Board, of which Brown is a member and Chambless is an affiliate member. The society has over 850 active chapters in the United States and abroad, inducting approximately 9,000 members annually.
