“Authentic Artists” Workshops Cancelled

Lee University’s School of Music will present The Authentic Artists Workshops Thursday through Sunday, Jan. 19-21. The three-day seminar will feature Joe Hernandez of jmh MEDIA and Dr. Maryann Kyle of MK Studio who will guide participants in how to be successful musicians.      

The workshop will begin with a joint seminar on Thursday evening at 7, featuring Hernandez and Kyle focusing on how to be an authentic artist. This event will take place in Squires Recital Hall, located in the Humanities Center on Paul Conn Parkway.

On Friday at 2:30 p.m., Hernandez will speak about the artist’s branding process and answer questions following the lecture. At 8:05 p.m., he will conduct a seminar on “Building a Successful Career in the Performing Arts Industry.” Both events will take place in Squires Recital Hall.

Kyle will teach a class on authentic belting and training crossover artists Friday at 9:05 a.m., followed by a Q&A at 11:15 a.m. On Friday evening at 7:05, she will present “Effective Use of Empathy in Teaching and/or Practical Pedagogy for Crossover Training” in Squires Recital Hall.  

Hernandez will also provide headshots and/or consultations, and Kyle will hold optional private coaching sessions on Saturday, Jan. 21 from 10 a.m. to noon and 1-3 p.m. 

Hernandez is the owner, creative director, and marketing manager for jmh MEDIA and specializes in designing websites and brand establishment. His clients include Broadway producers, nationally-recognized opera companies, various small businesses, and artists from all over the world.  He received his Master of Fine Arts in directing from the University of Southern Mississippi and his bachelor’s degree in theatre performance from University of Mobile.

Kyle is an accomplished vocalist and voice instructor who helps singers and teachers not only become exceptional singers, but ones who deliver engaging performances. She mentors over 30 teachers of voice and theatre in various universities across the United States, and her students can be found on the stages of the finest opera and musical theatre companies, conservatories, and training programs across the globe. She is an active performer of multiple music genres and has shared the stage with acclaimed artists such as Denyce Graves, William Warfield, Timothy Noble, and Marietta Simpson.  

The registration fee for the Authentic Artists Workshops is $40. There will be an additional fee for participants wanting headshots, consultation, or private sessions.
