Leigh Michels Atherton was recently honored as Lee University’s Department of Communication Arts’ Alumna of the Year during the school’s 2021 Homecoming festivities.

Atherton graduated Lee with her bachelor’s in communication and media studies in 2008. After graduation she began her career at Life Care Centers of America, where ove r the course of 13 years, she rose from the level of public relations assistant to vice president for corporate and community relations.

“Those of us who taught Leigh recognized her talent and dedication,” said Dr. Joel Kailing, chair of the Department of Communication Arts. “It was no surprise to us that she went on to a distinguished career at Life Care Centers of America. She is a wonderful example of how student success translates into professional success.”

In December 2013, Atherton received Life Care’s Danette Henry Servant Leader Award, which recognizes an associate at the Life Care offices in Cleveland for outstanding customer service to Life Care’s more than 220 facilities nationwide.

During her time at Lee, Atherton was involved in the Public Relations Student Society of America, the Bateman public relations competition team, and was a member of the National Communication Honors Society.

Atherton received the Lee award at the department dessert reception on November 5 and, along with the other department award winners, was honored during the Homecoming basketball games the following day.
