Archaeology Students Excavate Old Main

Lee University’s Introduction to Archaeology class conducted a hands-on dig on April 13-14, with the instruction of Dr. Richard Jones and Dr. Murl Dirksen, both professors of anthropology at Lee. Students excavated three predetermined spots where the north end of Old Main was located, the multi-purpose structure formerly used by Lee College on the front of campus. Lee’s Higginbotham Administration Building now covers most of the Old Main site. Students found bits of broken brick and glass, along with some old nails, all of which are remains of Old Main. The archaeology class is pictured here along with Jones (right) and Dirksen (center back). Lee students are also shown excavating one of the sites, while Dirksen is pictured sifting through findings.
