Dr. Laura Anderson, professor of education, has been selected as the recipient of Lee University’s 2013 Excellence in Teaching Award.

The Excellence Awards are the highest honors presented to Lee faculty members and recognize advising, scholarship and teaching. The oldest award and considered to be superior among the three is Excellence in Teaching. The winner of this award is chosen by a special committee which includes representatives of six different academic departments.

Lee President Dr. Paul Conn announced the news Thursday, congratulating Anderson for “this recognition of her outstanding performance in the classroom.” Conn will officially present the award to her this Saturday during commencement.

Anderson joined the Lee University Helen DeVos College of Education in 1996, and teaches in the Department of Early Childhood, Elementary and Special Education. Prior to coming to Lee, she taught elementary school for 17 years in her home state of South Carolina, where she was selected Teacher of the Year in 1982, 1986 and 1995.

Anderson teaches a number of elementary methods courses including Elementary Methods, Principles of Instruction, and her favorite, Children’s Literature. Her specialty is researching gender differences in learning to read.
