The Registered Nurse is the primary caregiver of patients that present to the Lee University Health Clinic. The RN is responsible for promoting and implementing the standards of practice while utilizing the standards of care established by the Tennessee Board of Nursing and the American College Health Association to enhance the educational process by maximizing the health and well-being of the students physically, intellectually, socially, emotionally, developmentally, and spiritually. This is accomplished through the promotion of an optimal level of health for each individual and in conjunction with Lee University’s policies and procedures.  The nurse will comply with the legal requirements set forth by HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) as it relates to the treatment of confidential medical information.  The nurse will have full knowledge of and abide by the provisions detailed in this job description as well as all written or verbal policies, procedures and instructions in the Lee University Staff Handbook.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Perform Quality Assurance for the in-house lab and maintain compliance with CLIA and OSHA requirements for laboratory testing.
  • Perform inventory, ordering, and stocking of clinic necessary medications and supplies.
  • Participate in the travel clearance process and possess accurate knowledge for all university sponsored trips abroad to include travel clinics, physical exams, immunizations, documentation, and reporting.
  • Possess knowledge of immunizations and medications housed within the clinic.
  • Assist RDs and RAs with resident hall health promotion, injury prevention, and medical interventions.
  • Help coordinate and promote the campus blood drives.
  • Attend staff, sector, and campus meetings as requested by the Director.
  • Recommend the appropriate follow-up care for those patients that require it.
  • Carry out reasonable instructions given by the Director of Health Services and clinic providers.
  • Carry out reasonable instructions by given by the President, Vice President for Student Life, and other Lee University administrative leaders.
  • Participate in university wellness promotion, health education, and counseling.
  • Communicate effectively, relaying accurate information to faculty, staff, parents, and students, in a timely manner by email or phone.
  • Provide clear documentation, charting, and reporting.
  • Input and maintain accurate data and records with confidentiality.
  • Perform general administrative duties as requested by the departmental director.
  • Maintain appropriate relationships with others in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Operate as a team player in a fast-paced environment.
  • Maintain a positive attitude and flexibility in all situations.
  • Organize and manage complex tasks.
  • Must be able to multi-task and prioritize duties.
  • Tend to detail in every aspect of the position.
  • Willing to brainstorm, create, and implement new ideas.
  • Operate various computer programs used in the clinic.
  • Work outside the normal business hours as the clinic demands.
 
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must be able to care for all patients, well and sick, without restrictions.
  • Perform patient health history, broad-based clinical assessments, and medical evaluations for a variety of illnesses and conditions.
  • Provide emergency medical care and referrals.
  • Carry out orders for treatment and care as prescribed by the physicians.
  • Carry out reasonable instructions given by the Director of Health Services and the clinic physicians.
  • Communicate effectively, relaying accurate information to clinic staff, faculty, staff, parents, and students in a timely manner.
  • Maintain appropriate relationships with others in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Operate as a team player in a fast-paced environment.
  • Organize and manage complex tasks.
  • Brainstorm, create, and implement new ideas.
  • Perform the many tasks, testing, and patient care competently and consistently.
  • Work outside the normal business hours periodically for special events.
  • Work hours that ensure the best clinical staff coverage. Schedule will be determined by the Director of Health Services.

EDUCATION and/or WORK EXPERIENCE
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing and licensed by the State of Tennessee to practice as a Registered Nurse.
  • Maintain state licensure and educational requirements.
  • Maintain CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and BLS (Basic Life Support) certification which includes proficiency in the use of the AED (automated external defibrillator).
  • At least 2 years of work experience in Medical-Surgical Nursing with patient care applications.
  • Excellent clinical skills that are used to plan and implement nursing care in conformance with currently recognized nursing techniques and procedures.
  • Utilization of continuing education to enhance skills and have a current knowledge base regarding new nursing practice processes.
 
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Walking, standing, stooping, sitting, and bending at intervals throughout the workday.
  • Detailed work with computer programs, e-mails, and reports
  • Must be able to lift 40 pounds using proper body mechanics.
 
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
  • Job may inadvertently expose the employee to communicable illnesses due to the nature of working in a medical environment.
  • Work environment is normally temperature-stable; however, variations may occur during seasonal changes and regulation.
  • Some exposure to chemicals used for cleaning and disinfection is possible.
