The Part-Time Mechanic is responsible for performing preventive maintenance, diagnostics, inspections, and repairs on vehicles and equipment operated by the Campus Security Department and other assigned university assets. This position helps ensure that university vehicles remain safe, reliable, and operational to support campus safety and daily operations. The mechanic works independently under general supervision and supports the mission and values of Lee University through professional and efficient service.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Perform routine maintenance on campus security vehicles, including oil changes, tire rotations, brake inspections, fluid checks, and filter replacements.
• Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and operational issues using appropriate testing equipment and repair procedures.
• Complete repairs on university vehicles and equipment, including patrol vehicles, utility vehicles, golf carts, trailers, and other assigned assets.
• Conduct vehicle safety inspections and document maintenance needs.
• Maintain records of repairs, inspections, parts inventory, and scheduled maintenance.
• Order and track replacement parts and supplies within department guidelines.
• Ensure compliance with all applicable safety standards and university policies.
• Respond to urgent vehicle maintenance issues that impact campus operations.
• Keep the maintenance workspace clean, organized, and safe.
• Communicate repair recommendations and vehicle status updates to supervisory personnel.
• Assist with seasonal equipment maintenance and special projects as assigned.
• Support fleet readiness during university events, emergencies, and campus operations.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Working knowledge of gasoline and diesel engines, electrical systems, brakes, steering, suspension, and preventive maintenance practices.
• Ability to diagnose and repair a wide variety of mechanical issues.
• Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
• Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, lifts, and other repair equipment.
• Strong organizational and recordkeeping skills.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. 

EDUCATION and/or WORK EXPERIENCE

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum of two years of professional automotive or equipment maintenance experience. ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certification(s).
• Experience maintaining police, fleet, utility, or commercial vehicles.
• Experience with small engines, golf carts, or utility vehicles.
• Experience working within higher education, public safety, or municipal fleet environments.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly and occasionally up to 75 pounds with assistance.
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, and work in confined spaces for extended periods.
• Ability to work in varying weather conditions and garage environments.
• Sufficient vision, hearing, and manual dexterity to diagnose and repair vehicles safely.

WORK SCHEDULE

• Part-time hours as determined by departmental needs.
• Flexible scheduling may include daytime hours and occasional evenings or weekends.
• Availability to assist with urgent vehicle repairs during special events or emergencies is preferred.
