Music, News, Presidential Concert Series

The Lee University Presidential Concert Series will continue its 33rd season with a performance by Chris Brubeck’s Triple Play on Thursday, March 26, at 7:30 p.m. in the Dixon Center.

Returning to Lee for the first time since 2015, the trio features Peter “Madcat” Ruth on harmonica, guitar, percussion, and vocals; Joel Brown on guitar and vocals; and Chris Brubeck on electric bass, bass trombone, piano, and vocals.

“If you are looking for a night of incredible music and unbridled joy, this is the concert for you,” said Dr. Vanessa Wei, director of the Presidential Concert Series. “Triple Play has a way of blending different styles that feels fresh and soulful at the same time. Whether you are a longtime jazz fan or just looking for a great night out, their performance will be a major highlight of our series.”

Praised by Paul de Barros, writer for The Seattle Times and DownBeat, “Triple Play is what jazz always was and always should be about: good-time rhythm, unbridled joy and the sweet release but bittersweet aftertaste of the blues.”

Triple Play’s musical roots span nearly 40 years in each member’s history. Brubeck and Ruth have toured and recorded together in different settings since 1969, first as young rock musicians in the groups New Heavenly Blue and Sky King and then as jazz musicians touring the world with Dave Brubeck. In 1999, Ruth joined Brubeck and Brown to form the group Triple Play.

With an ever-expanding repertoire, the trio continues to perform in concert halls, clubs, and festivals across the country, including performances of Chris Brubeck’s symphonic arrangements with orchestras throughout the United States.

This concert is generously supported by the Tennessee Arts Commission.
