Summer Honors Welcomes 180 Students

Lee University’s 37th annual Summer Honors program recently hosted 180 incoming freshmen and rising high school seniors from around the country for a two-week experience. This spiritual, interactive, and academic event prepares them for the academic and social opportunities of college.

This year’s theme was “Alive,” and students were encouraged and challenged to become “fully alive in Christ” and help others do the same.

“In just two short weeks, Summer Honors brought such an authentically vulnerable community that showed me a glimpse of what Christ’s love looks like,” said Aly Prater, Summer Honors participant. “During Summer Honors, God directed my steps and made the impossible, possible.”

From June 19 – July 1, the students participated in various activities in and outside of the classroom. They had the choice of two out of 13 courses to take to gain six college credits. Class selections included “Igniting the World for Change: The Bible, Transformational Teaching, and You,” “Medications, Manikins, and Moulage,” and “Emerge: Knowing Yourself and Writing a Better Story,” among others.

Outside of the classroom, students took a trip to Southside Social in Chattanooga, went whitewater rafting, played in a campus-wide game of capture the flag, competed in the traditional Greek Olympics, participated in Open-Air Karaoke, and enjoyed an “‘80s Night” party.

In between classes and activities, students also took time to serve the community, working with organizations like Hope4One, a nonprofit that assists foster families in Cleveland.

Through devotionals and small groups, students were also able to experience the faith-development aspect of campus life.

“The students at Summer Honors 2022 remind me of why our future is full of hope,” said Dr. Mike Hayes, director of Summer Honors 2022. “Their sense of passion, calling, and care for others is inspiring.”
