Lee University’s School of Music will hold its second masterclass in cooperation with the Chattanooga Symphony & Opera (CSO) featuring guest artist Robert Barefield, baritone, on Wednesday, Oct. 19 at 2 p.m. in Squires Recital Hall.

In conjunction with teaching a masterclass at Lee, Barefield will perform as a guest baritone at the CSO on Thursday, Oct. 20 at 7:30 p.m.

Barefield has performed as a soloist throughout the United States and Europe with the Mississippi Symphony, the Central City Opera, and Operafestival di Roma in Italy, among others. In 2008, he played the role of Bishop Zumarraga in the world premiere of James DeMars’ opera, “Guadalupe – Our Lady of the Roses.” An accomplished recitalist, Barefield has performed works by contemporary composers such as Simon Sargon, Lowell Liebermann, Robert Maggio, and David Conte.

Barefield has also presented at national conferences of leading music organizations. His articles on voice-related topics have appeared in The Journal of Singing, The American Music Teacher, and The Music Educator’s Journal. He received a doctor of musical arts from the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and currently teaches voice at the University of Hartford Hartt School.

The masterclass is a free, non-ticketed event, and everyone is welcome to attend. Squires Recital Hall is located in Lee’s Humanities Center on Parker Street.
