Women’s Rugby Makes it to NSCRO Final Four

Women’s Rugby team make final four for NSCRO Championship

The Lee University Women’s Rugby team wrapped up a successful season by making it to the final four for the National Small College Rugby Organization (NSCRO) 15s Championship, held at Life University in Marietta, Georgia, on Dec. 7-8.

“The results from this season were a great achievement for a team with a high proportion of freshman or first year players,” said Dr. Michael Freake, head coach and professor of biology at Lee. “That bodes very well for the future as we will have a core group of players together for several years to come.”

The Lady Flames faced Endicott College in their first game of the NSCRO tournament, where Lee players Sabrina Childress and Sarah Crump scored. In their next game, against Minnesota State University-Moorhead, a score was made by Bailey Grubb.

“This level of rugby was a huge step up at final four, and our players learned a lot about dealing with pressure, staying composed, and working together,” said Freake. “At the end of the day, we have focused a lot on building team culture, communicating well, and supporting one another on and off the field, and undoubtedly that helped us produce some great performances.”

The team’s friendly games this semester were against UTC (win), KSU (win), UTK (win), and Lander (loss). Lee was invited to compete at the NSCRO Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in November where the Lady Flames beat York College and Catholic College of America to advance to the final four. Bailey Grubb was named tournament MVP for the regional championships.

“We look forward to getting back on the field and working hard next semester for the 7s season,” said Freake.
