On Sunday, Oct. 24, Lee University will present the 15th Annual Walking Tour of Historic Fort Hill Cemetery. Dr. Randy Wood, chair of Lee’s Department of History, Political Science, and Humanities, organizes this event each year.

Tours will be led by Lee University history majors and volunteers who will introduce the community to several fascinating Clevelanders and Bradley Countians from the 19th and early 20th centuries buried at Fort Hill. Students and local performers dressed in period costume will bring these early residents to life.

This year the tour will include the following historical characters: Julius and Matilda Raht, Edwin and Anna Plummer Delany, Pleasant and Caroline Vance Craigmiles, Nathaniel Grant, Dr. William and Annie Taylor Schultz, James Anderson Hoxworth, Rev. James and Katie May Knapp Pogue, Abraham and Charlotte Lee Wolbach, Herman J. and Henrietta Kuhlmann Schrader, Edward Christian, and Augusta Ruth Wagner.

“Having the opportunity to participate in Lee’s Cemetery Tour was one of my favorite extracurricular activities during my undergraduate career,” said Audrey Haley, a 2019 Lee political science alumna. “It was a delight to learn about the community that used to live in Cleveland and to convey their stories to our current community. I had a lot of fun getting to know students from other disciplines on campus and will always treasure my experience.”

Tours begin at 4 p.m. and will start every 15 minutes until dusk, lasting about 75 minutes each. The last tour will begin shortly after 6 p.m.

Tickets cost $5 per person or $2 for students and are purchased on site. Informational brochures will also be available there.

Guests should park at Cleveland Christian Fellowship on 695 S. Ocoee St. and ride the van that will shuttle guests to and from the tour site.
