A Midsummer
Night's Dream is a wonderful and spirited comedy
in which William Shakespeare strung together
stories of new, awakened, and renewed love.
In a tale where "the course of true love never
did run smooth," we are treated to a fun,
frolicking romp into another world, where a
fight between Fairy King Oberon and Fairy Queen
Titania leads to mischief with young mortals in
and out of love with each other. Helena is
in love with Demetrius who in turn loves Hermia,
but Hermia loves Lysander and will do anything
to escape from her arranged marriage with
Demetrius, which her father, Egeus, has demanded
of her. So, into the night they go, and
before you know it, Oberon and Puck, his knavish
jest, orchestrate a series of mischievous and
magical tricks by which love is transformed,
misplaced, deceived, revealed and in the end
restored.
But dont get the idea that Lee University's
Spring 2002 show was your average Shakespeare
production, oh no, there were no melodramatic
actors in poofy clothing in this show. If
fact, you may have even recognized some of your
favorite media figures frolicking through the
woods, or in our case, a fantisiful world of
Hollywood. Our production explored
questions like "do media and entertainment have
a hold on our lives, and do they influence how
we love?"
Our audience followed our young couples as they
learned the answer to these questions. |
