This
year’s romantic comedy, Father of the Bride (written by Caroline Francke
and directed by Dr. Mark Burnette) was a big hit with Lee Day crowds and the
community. MR & MRS “degrees” have never been part of the curriculum for Lee
University, but they have always played an important role in the lives of the
students. So, Father of the Bride was well received by everyone!
Dr. Burnette, who joined the Communication & the Arts Department here at Lee
this past summer, described the story line as follows. “Although set in the
1950’s, Father of the Bride presents a timeless struggle of a father coping with
both his daughter growing up, and with the ever-mounting expense of staging a
wedding that pleases her and the rest of the family. Stanley Banks is suffering
a double whammy of sorts- He's losing his daughter and he's paying for it too!”
The realistic set built by Jon Wills, Technical Theatre Manager, and his crew
(see sideline) includes a 16 foot two story house with two 12-step flights of
stairs placed in front and back of the set. Antique furniture from the 50’s era
made one believe they had been flung back in time.
When asked how acting in this show compared to other shows he’s been in,
Jonathan Moots (the father of the bride) said, “Like every show the cast is
unique. Even in shows where you’re performing with the same people the dynamic
changes every time you get people together for a different show. Of course, this
being Dr. “B’s” first show here at Lee it’s been a life-changing experience.”
Costumer, Kim Wills (’00), said "It was a really fun show. I'm sure most
everyone can relate to the craziness of planning a big family event and how
easily things can get out of hand. We had a great time looking through
historical clothing and creating new items that looked like something from a
1950s Vogue cover."
All in all the Father of the Bride was another successful production here
at Lee University’s Theatre!
