Atkins-Ellis was dedicated in September 1994 in honor of Iris and Henry Atkins with gratitude for their generosity to the university. Atkins-Ellis also stands as a memorial to the original Ellis Hall that was burned down in November 1993. Ellis Hall was named in honor of the Reverend J.B. Ellis, the third president of Lee College.
