    General Questions

    Does the university have a curfew policy?

    Curfew is checked for all freshmen (29 hours or fewer) nightly by a Resident Assistant. Students 20 years of age or older do not have curfew.

    Freshmen curfew hours are as follows:
    Sunday-Thursday 12:00 Midnight
    Friday and Saturday 1:00 a.m.

    When will I find out about my residence hall assignment?

    Residence Hall assignments will be sent via email in February, May, June, and July for the fall semester and in November for the spring semester.

    How are roommate assignments made?

    Specific roommate assignments are made by the Resident Director of each residence hall. He or she will strive to find a compatible roommate for you using the specific indicators of personal information given on your residence hall application.

    What if I don’t get assigned to one of the residence halls I preferred?

    Once you receive your housing assignment, you can contact the Residential Life and Housing office to be placed on the waiting list for your preferred residence hall. We will try our best to accommodate your request; however, due to limited openings, we cannot always guarantee a move.

    What if I need special accommodations?

    Special accommodations should be communicated to the Admissions Office upon applying to the University.

    May I have my own room?

    Residence hall rooms are double-occupancy rooms only.

    What furniture is provided in my room?

    Each student will have a twin (extra-long) bed, dresser, desk and chair. This furniture is not provided for residents of Carroll Courts (married and non-traditional housing).

    What size are the beds in the residence halls?

    All the beds on campus are extra-long twins.

    Can I raise my bed for extra storage space?

    Yes, you can raise your bed for extra storage space. Concrete blocks may not be used to raise beds because they damage the furniture.

    How many people share a bathroom?

    In the community style residence halls (Medlin, Simmons, and Nora Chambers) students share a community bathroom (with privacy separators) located on each floor. In the suite style residence halls (Atkins-Ellis, Cross, Davis, Sharp, Tharp, New Hughes, O’Bannon and Bowdle) two rooms are connected by one bathroom, with four people sharing each bathroom. In the apartment style (B.L. Hicks, Keeble, Livingston, and Storms Hall) there is a bathroom for every two students. In Brinsfield Row and Livingston East, four students share a full bath and a half bath.

    Are there facilities for washing and drying my clothes?

    Every residence hall has laundry facilities. It costs $1.25 per washer and $1.00 per dryer. Livingston East and Brinsfield Row townhomes have a washer and dryer at no expense to the student. With the exception of Carroll Courts, all laundry facilities are both quarter and debit card operated. The laundry facilities in Carroll Courts are coin operated only.

    What about extension cords or multi-plugs?

    Power strips with surge protectors are allowed, however, due to fire safety regulations, extension cords are not permitted in residence hall rooms.

    Are pets allowed?

    Pets are not allowed in the halls or on the premises.

    Is purchasing a meal plan mandatory?

    Freshmen (29 credit hours or fewer not including credits received through Summer Honors, dual-enrollment or AP credit) living on campus are required to purchase a meal plan option. Students 21 years of age or older or those with 30 plus credit hours are not required to have a meal plan.

    What if I need something repaired in my room?

    You may submit maintenance requests through your residence hall team. It is their responsibility to report items to the Physical Plant department. Your Resident Director will outline the specific procedures for your residence hall during the residence hall meeting at the beginning of each semester.

    What about bringing my own refrigerator or microwave?

    Students can bring a small refrigerator and a small (700 watt or less) microwave. Students can elect to bring two smaller refrigerators, but the combined cubic feet cannot exceed 4.5. Most residence halls have community microwaves and refrigerators.

    What is the alcohol and smoking policy?

    Lee University is a drug and alcohol free campus. Please review the Student Handbook for specific guidelines and expectations.

    May I bring a car to campus?

    Due to growing demands for campus parking, freshmen are discouraged from bringing cars to the Lee University campus. Those who choose to bring cars will be assigned to auxiliary parking lots which are not contiguous to residence halls but are within walking distance.

    How will I receive U.S. mail while I live on campus?

    Each student will be assigned a campus post office mailbox at registration.

    What are the visitation policies? May I have visitors in my residence hall room?

    Students of the opposite sex are allowed in the main lobbies of the dormitories until curfew. Members of the opposite sex will not be permitted beyond the lobby of any dorm or in the bedroom of any apartment unless given permission from the Resident Director. This policy applies during all breaks as well. Brinsfield Row, Livingston East, Livingston, Keeble, Storms and B.L. Hicks- Male/Female visitors will be allowed to visit in the apartment living room on the following days and times only:

    Monday-Thursday 3:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m.
    Friday 12:00 noon-1:00 a.m.
    Saturday 12:00 noon-1:00 a.m.
    Sunday 12:00 noon-9:00 p.m.

    Do residence halls stay open when Lee University is closed?

    Residence halls stay open during Fall break, Thanksgiving break, Spring break, and Easter break. The residence halls are CLOSED during Christmas break.

    May I bring a bicycle to campus?

    Yes, however, bicycles are not to be kept inside the residence halls for any reason, as this is a violation of the fire code. Bike racks are provided for each residence hall, and students are encouraged to lock all bikes appropriately. No storage hooks may be installed in the ceiling. The University assumes no responsibility for lost, stolen, or damaged bicycles.

    Will the University pay for any property loss resulting from theft or maintenance issues in the residence hall rooms?

    While the University takes reasonable measures to prevent theft and vandalism, individual students must take responsibility for keeping their room doors and windows locked at all times. University insurance does not cover loss of personal possessions, and the university does not assume responsibility for damaged, lost or stolen items from any part of the residence hall. We do, however, recommend parents check into their existing home owner's insurance plan to see if coverage extends to their student’s residence hall room. Insurance can also be purchased through National Student Services, Inc. ( at very reasonable rates.

    What to leave behind

    Computers, Cable, & Phones

    Is there wireless access in the residence halls?

    All residence halls have wireless internet connection with the exception of Carroll Courts and Auxiliary housing. Students residing in these locations will not be charged a telecommunications fee and may purchase their own internet service.

    Is phone service provided by the University?

    A lobby phone is located in each residence hall lobby for free local dialing as well as collect and credit card calling.

    Is cable television available in the residence halls?

    Cable television is located in most residence hall lounges. Students are permitted to purchase basic cable from the local cable company in their apartments in the following residence halls: Brinsfield Row, Keeble, Livingston, Livingston East, Storms, New Hughes and B. L. Hicks.

    Bed Loft Policies and Usage

    Lee University’s Bed Loft Policy is currently undergoing evaluation. The updated policy will be available soon.

    Security & Fire Safety Information

    The University maintains a Campus Safety staff to provide protection for students, staff, and property. Safety officers perform a variety of duties including regulating traffic and parking, filing vehicle accident reports, securing all buildings, maintaining order, providing assistance in times of emergency, and contacting local law enforcement authorities when needed. Students can also be escorted from parking lots to the residence halls by calling Security ten minutes before escort services are needed. Residence halls are secured 24/7. Each resident is assigned a student ID card that must be scanned in order to have access into his or her residence hall.

    Fire Safety Overview

    Fire safety is of preeminent concern at Lee University, and the tips on this page will help you live safely in the residence halls. Be aware that reckless behavior and destruction of fire safety equipment could cause serious injury or death. This page summarizes the state of fire safety at Lee, particularly as it applies to students and Lee residence halls.

    University Fire Safety Practices

    • There are smoke detectors in the residence halls, all student rooms, lounges, and hallways. In the residence halls, all student rooms, lounges, and hallways have smoke detectors.
    • These smoke detectors are checked every two weeks in the Residence Halls by the Resident Assistants (RA’s).
    • If any smoke detectors are found to be malfunctioning, they are reported to our Physical Plant department and are replaced right away.
    • Fire extinguishers in the residence halls are inspected monthly by the Senior RA’s. Defective or discharged extinguishers are replaced immediately.
    • All residence hall rooms are checked by the RA’s weekly for fire hazards including wiring overloads, unauthorized appliances, blocked fire detectors, and other unsafe conditions.
    • The Resident Directors (RD’s) execute three formal fire drills during the fall semester and two formal fire drills during the spring semester within each of their residence halls.

    Prohibited Items

    The following information is distributed to students each year and published in the Lee University Student Handbook, which is the student guide to University rules and regulations. To protect the safety and welfare of students, the following items are prohibited in all residence halls. The items listed are specifically related to fire safety and are not inclusive of all items prohibited in residence halls.

    These prohibited items include:
    • Fireworks, incense, electric blankets, candles, and flammable/volatile liquids including fuels, cans of paint, paint thinner, and turpentine.
    • Microwaves over 700 watts.
    • Hot plates, deep fat fryers, toasters, open flame, or open-coil appliances. Illegal appliances will be confiscated and may result in disciplinary action. (Note: George Foreman grills, toaster ovens, crock pots, and coffee makers are permitted to be stored in student rooms but can only be used in designated kitchen areas).
    • Air conditioners, space heaters, ceiling fans, or refrigerators larger than 4.5 cubic feet or exceeding 7 amps. Roommates may bring two compact refrigerators, but the combined cubic feet cannot exceed 4.5.
    • Halogen Lamps
    • Dimmer switches and ceiling fixtures may not be installed.
    • Nothing is allowed to obstruct any window, hallway, corridor, or stairwell. Doors must be able to open fully.
    • Fire doors and any door with a closing mechanism must not be propped open or disabled.
    • Students cannot install paneling or partitions in their rooms or suites.


    Smoking is not permitted on the Lee University campus.

    Cooking in Rooms

    Cooking is allowed within the apartments, but is strictly prohibited in dormitories except within designated kitchen areas.


    Do not place decorations on ceilings. Materials on the ceilings may impede the activation of smoke and heat detection equipment. Wall and ceiling decorations will increase the speed of fire spread. Limit decorations to a maximum of 25% of the available wall space, which in most rooms equates to an area approximately 8’X8’.

    Fire Safety Equipment

    Fire safety equipment in residence halls is intended for the protection of all residents and is not to be tampered with. Misuse of this equipment, including the removal of batteries from battery-operated smoke and heat detectors, is a serious violation of university rules and TN law, and may result in disciplinary and/or legal action. Fire safety equipment includes smoke and heat detectors, fire evacuation instructions and maps, fire-alarm pull boxes, fire extinguishers, emergency panels, and electrical panels.

    Fire Alarms

    Students are required by Tennessee state law to evacuate their residence hall when a fire alarm is sounded. Students who fail to obey this law may be fined $125 and/or referred to the Dean of Students for disciplinary action. When a fire alarm is sounded in a residence hall, residence directors, resident assistants, and public safety officers will go door-to-door alerting students and checking that all students have left the building. If smoke or fire is present, this duty will be the responsibility of the fire department.

    Evacuation Procedures

    • Know the location of all fire extinguishers on your floor
    • Know at least two routes to get out of your building
    • Keep fire doors closed at all times
    • Never ignore a fire alarm

    If a student suspects a fire, or if the alarm sounds:

    1. Crawl to the door, staying close to the floor to avoid smoke or super-heated gases that may have entered the room.
    2. Feel the door. If it is hot, do not open it because the fire may be on the other side. If it is not hot, open the door carefully. If the hall is clear, move quickly to an exit door.
    3. Use the stairwells to exit the building. NEVER use the elevators when an alarm is sounding.
    4. If you have to exit through your window, either open it manually or break the glass with a chair or drawer. Put a blanket over the sill to protect you from the broken glass. Hang from the window by your hands before you drop in order to shorten the distance to the ground.
    5. Once outside, move far away from the building. This is for your safety and it allows the fire department access to the building.
    6. Once you are safe, call 911 and Campus Safety at (423) 303-4444 to report the fire.
    7. If you are trapped, put a wet cloth under the closed door to help prevent the spread of smoke. Dial 911 and Campus Safety at (423) 303-4444, and tell the operator your residence hall name, your room number, and that you need help.
