The Lee University Rugby Football Club Captures First Ever MidSouth Title
March Madness is in full swing for the Lee University Rugby Club. After posting
a shutout win over Emory University to capture their first ever berth to the
title game, Lee continued its winning ways by downing Tennessee Tech to win the
MidSouth Championship.
With the win, the club earned the right to host the quarterfinal round of the
USA Rugby South Championships. They will host Mississippi State University on
Saturday afternoon a 1:30pm. The winners of the quarterfinal matches will move
on to Tuscaloosa for the USAR South Final Four. The winner of that round moves
on to the National Championships. Coach Guy DeLoach was thrilled with the win.
He stated that Tennessee Tech was probably the stronger team, but felt that
Lee’s squad could counter with speed.
Enter Old Man Weather. The match, held at the University of the South on
Monteagle Mountain, was played under severe conditions that included hail and
horizontal rain. The match turned into a slugfest. Lee held a 10-0 lead at the
half which Tech cut to 10-6 before Lee finished them off with a late try. Lee
had already clinched a spot in the quarters by winning the Conference A East
division. Tennessee Tech will travel to play the University of Louisiana
Lafayette. Teams rounding out the South Region are Duke University, Furman,
Coastal Carolina and Elon University. |
