Small Jazz Combos Concert at Lee

Lee University’s School of Music will present the Small Jazz Combos concert on Thursday, April 18 at 7:30 p.m. in the Dixon Center.

Music for the evening will be provided by three different ensembles, two octets (rhythm section plus four winds) and a guitar ensemble, directed by Shawn Perkinson, instructor of guitar at Lee.

The concert includes selections from the music of Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Stanley Turrentine, Duke Ellington and Pat Metheny.

The program will feature performances by 22 students: Dan Anderson, Joey Archer, Michael Bailey, Matthew Benton, Stephen Frey, Tyler Hatmaker, Paul Hayes, Richard Henson, Nate Hoppel, Israel Illingworth, Jay Newsome II, Hamilton Provonsha, Jonathan Robbins, Jordan Robson, Luke Simpson, Shaun Sneed, Drew Strike, Andrew Thomas, Alyssa Turner, Drew Walden, Murphy Wynkoop and Isaac York. 

Perkinson is a former member of “Kings of the Killer Fish” and has opened shows for Jerry Garcia Band, Wide Spread Panic, Charlie Daniels Band and performed at the 1997 MTV Spring Break Show in Panama City.  He has also released two Jazz albums with the E.M.P. project, one in 2003 and another in 2005.

The concert is a free, non-ticketed event, and the community is welcome to attend.
