Lee University Festival Choir To Sing at Obama Inauguration
Thursday, January 17, 2013
On Monday, Jan. 21, the Lee University Festival Choir will sing at the 57th Presidential Inauguration. The choir's performance will occur immediately before the official swearing-in ceremonies at midday on the upper west terrace of the United States Capitol.
US Senator Lamar Alexander announced on Nov. 1 the choir’s invitation to perform at the Capitol.
The 200 singers in the Festival Choir were chosen from the student members of the university's seven choral ensembles. The choir will be conducted by Dean of the School of Music Dr. William Green.
On behalf of the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies, US Senator Lamar Alexander invited the choral group in November to sing at the event. Alexander said he recommended the Lee musicians because "their great talent and inspirational musicianship will thrill the millions of people who will be watching the inauguration of our president."
The choir was selected from seven campus choral ensembles, which hold regular auditions for members. These vocal ensembles have appeared around the world at venues as varied as Carnegie Hall, the NBC television show “Sing Off,” and St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. The groups present choral masterworks, pop and gospel music, and standard classical literature, performing composers ranging from Duruflé to Bach to John Rutter.
