Because We're Supposed To

There are numerous passages through the Bible that call us to serving others. Think about the powerful call of Paul to unity in Philippians 2:1-11. He encourages the believers to unite together by having the mind of Christ. Just as Jesus humbly served us through the crucifixion, we are to serve each other.

Ponder how we fight for position. In Mark 10:35-45, James and John ask for positions of greatness next to Jesus. Jesus calls a meeting with all 12 of the disciples to respond to the request. He lets them know that true greatness in the kingdom is about being a servant. In verse 45, Jesus closes out the lesson with what I like to call his mission statement: "For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

Picture Jesus just hours before his death washing the disciples' feet during his last meal. Jesus was contrasting the values of the kingdom and the world. He was driven by serving instead of self-interest. His goal wasn't based on self-will but self-abandonment. And, really, when you look at it, it runs a little deeper. He wasn't just about performing service. He was about being a servant. By washing the disciples' feet, he was showing that life isn't all about status and position but about serving. Many thought he would come with a crown and sword. Instead, he came with a towel.

So, what does all of this mean for us? In 1 Peter 4:7-11, we are challenged to follow Jesus' lead in using our gifts in service.

7The end of all things is near. Therefore be clear minded and self-controlled so that you can pray. 8Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. 9Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. 10Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms. 11If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.

Take a look at verse 10. Think about what it's saying. We have been given gifts. We, as agents of God's grace, are to use these to serve others! And, the phenomenal thing is that God provides the strength to get it done, too!

Simply put, serving is something we do because we're mandated to do it by God. It wasn't some remote command from some out-of-touch, paternalistic being. God became man and did life on our turf to serve us. How will we respond?
