Reasons for
service learning...
“Through my experience in REL 200, I have realized that to serve in true
benevolence you must serve without expecting to get anything back out of it. It
makes it easy to serve when you know that what you are doing is being
appreciated. It becomes quite difficult to serve someone that does not recognize
what you are doing and does not offer you anything in return for your service.
Yet this is the true meaning of benevolence, to serve without ever expecting to
receive anything in return. I know that this type of service and love can only
come out of me when I am filled with Christ.”
~ Aaron Skaggs, Alumni
“Every time I leave the Safe Haven, I do so with a lighter heart.”
~ Jessica, student
““We had to show the people of Cleveland that Lee students are honest and
hard workers… Also, I think they are getting the message that Lee kids are
people of integrity and love. To me, that is the biggest part of service
learning. These projects helped open my eyes to how needed and how valuable
service truly is to those receiving it. It is priceless to them and they are so
thankful to have someone come in to help just because they want to.””
~ Joshua, student
“I felt good because I helped someone that really needed
help. By the time I had to leave I didn’t care whether or not I got service
hours, I was happy because I took part in a good cause. I was glad that instead
of sleeping in that morning I was able to do something that made someone else
happy.”
~ Jose, student
“The girls were such a blessing and I’m enjoying a
cleaner house. Thank God for people who bless old people’s life.”
~Minnie, elderly woman
“Thank you so much for the time and service that the
students gave to us on this day. The residents thoroughly enjoyed the
interaction and time with the students. Everyone was extremely friendly and
respectful. We truly enjoyed their presence on our campus!”
~ Esmeralda Lee, Campus Manager, Garden Plaza
“The Lord is very explicit in His direction regarding
the service of His people. A scripture that continually convicts me is James
2:15-17. James says, ‘Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes & daily
food. If one of you says to him, “Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed”
but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? In the same way,
faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.’ The love
generated in service is profound, while the concept remains incredibly simple.
The Leonard Center seeks to keep this loving attitude alive in our students and
our community.”
~Laura Bunch, student
“I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for your vision for this
community. North Lee Elementary school was a recipient of your vision for the
community service recently when 84 young people from Summer Honors Program spent
two hours investing in the lives of students they did not even know. The Summer
Honors participants cleaned out flower beds, scraped wax build up off of floors,
cleaned windows, pulled weeds and other materials from the playground, and
cleared my office for new carpet installation. All of these activities were done
without complaint. Again, thank you for all that you do for the Bradley County
community. Lee University has become a beacon for the people of Bradley County
…”
~Sharon Harper, Ed.D, Principal, North Lee
