Kairos Scholars Honors Program

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get in?
If you have a minimum ACT combined score of 27 or a SAT combined score of 1230, then you are eligible for the program. All you have to do at that point is apply by sending us a properly filled out form and the other materials requested. An Honors selection committee consisting of Honors faculty and students reviews the applications and selects 20 to 25 students for entry in the fall.

Is there any other way to get in?
Yes! If you are not accepted right away, you may apply again as a student on campus for second-semester admission. If a slot has come open during that time, your chances of admission into the program are good.

Also, exceptions to the admission requirements will be considered on a case-by-case basis. No guarantees are made, but all submissions will be carefully considered and weighed according to their merits.

What about AP and Dual Enrollment Credit?
While Lee accepts AP and Dual Enrollment credit, these hours won’t count toward your Honors commitment. If some of your transfer credit overlaps with courses required in the Honors Program, you will not be required to take those Honors course, but you will need to fulfill the total hours requirement for Honors.

How many Honors credit hours do I have to do?
The total number of Honors Credit hours required for the Honors Diploma is 30. Most of these hours are located in the general education core:

GST101 Freshman Seminar 2 hrs
BIO104 Environmental Science 4 hrs
ENG110 Rhetoric & Research 3 hrs
POL200 Contemporary Politics 3 hrs
HUM201 Foundations of Culture 3 hrs
HUM202 Rise of Europe 3 hrs
HUM301 Foundations of Modern 3 hrs
HIS351 Latin American Colonial 3 hrs
Total 24 hrs

The remaining six hours can be taken through two 1-hr discussion groups and a 4-hr contract class with a thesis project.

Honors students planning their courses for the future will want to avoid taking courses that might count for those mentioned above. If you have transfer, AP or Dual Enrollment for any of these, we will simply find additional honors hours with contract courses.

What is a Contract Course?
A Contract Course is a regular course offering within your major in which you arrange with the course instructor to do additional research. A 1-hr Directed Study is added to the course and supervised by the Honors Program Director. The result is 4 hours of Honors credit.

What if I am a Music major and don’t have to take the same Gen. Ed core?

Honors for Music majors will, in some cases, have to be individually planned in cooperation with the School of Music.

Do I have to declare a major to be in Honors?

No. You do not have to have declared a major to be part of the program.

Will I be doing a lot of extra work as an Honors student?

Lee University’s Honors Program is not designed to burden Honors students with extra work. The purpose of the program is to provide bright students with a challenging learning experience emphasizing innovative teaching and learning techniques and critical thinking. While in aggregate the typical honors student might end up spending more time on some class assignments, they need not worry that they will be doing “busy” work or extra material for its own sake.

Are the perks worth it?

The Honors Program is not primarily about the perks, though we try to reward Honors students for their involvement. The Honors Program is for people who love learning and want to do it in the company of others who also place a premium on the learning experience and enhanced development of intellect, character and servant leadership.

That being said, the Lee University Honors Program does offer a few perks such as priority class selection, quality extra-curricular activities and honors designation on transcripts and diplomas. We are currently developing an Honors Study Abroad option in Oxford, England (Summer), Honors designated housing and an Honors lounge.

The single best perk for Honors isn’t really a perk; it’s an integral part of the program, and that is the privilege to learn with other bright students who challenge each other to excel as well as the chance to get direct access to instructors at Lee University who are willing to work with them one-on-one.
