Global Perspectives - Grants & Scholarships

In addition to grants and scholarships available through the Lee University Financial Aid Office, students may qualify for the following programs for studying abroad:
 

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship:
The Gilman International Scholarship Program offers grants for U.S. citizen undergraduate students of limited financial means to pursue academic studies abroad.  Such international study is intended to better prepare U.S. students to assume significant roles in an increasingly global economy and interdependent world.  The scholarship is for study abroad in a country of the student's choice for fall and spring semesters and the length of travel must be between a minimum of 4 weeks (in one country) and a maximum of one academic year.  Scholarships range from $2,500 to $5,000 dollars for any single trip.

Freeman Award for Study in Asia:
The Freeman-ASIA Scholarship is for study abroad in an Asian country of the student’s choice for fall, spring, and summer semesters. For fall and spring semesters the length of travel must be 14 weeks and for summer at least 8 weeks. Students must have applied or have been accepted to a study abroad based program in: Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Macao, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, or Vietnam. A multi-country program is eligible only if the applicant will spend at least 8 weeks in one of the countries stated above and will have intensive language study during that period. Scholarships range from $2,500 for summer semester to $4,000.

Rotary International Ambassadorships:
The Ambassadorial Scholarships program is to further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries. The program sponsors several types of scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students as well as for qualified professionals pursuing vocational studies. While abroad, scholars serve as ambassadors of goodwill to the people of the host country and give presentations about their homelands to Rotary clubs and other groups. Scholarship amounts and application deadlines vary from region to region, depending upon the stipulations of each rotary club. Bridging Scholarships:
Bridging Scholarships are available for study in Japan and are provided by the Association of Teachers of Japanese. Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study are eligible to apply for these scholarships. Japanese language study is not a prerequisite. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and enrolled as undergraduates in a college or university in the U.S. before and during the time they are studying abroad. Funds range from $2,500 for semester trips to $4,000 for full year trips. Students studying in Japan on summer programs are not eligible to apply. NSEP: The National Security Education Program:
This program provides a unique funding opportunity for U.S. students to study world regions critical to U.S. interests (including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, the Caribbean, and the Middle East. Western European countries, Canada, Australia and New Zealand are excluded. The program was designed to provide resources in exchange for a commitment to seek work in the federal government. Award amounts are based on the study abroad costs and financial aid information provided by the applicant. The maximum award is $8,000 for a summer, $10,000 for a semester, or $20,000 for a full academic year. Students must inform IIE/NSEP of any additional outside funding they receive for their study abroad program.

**The scholarships listed above are extremely reputable. While there are many other opportunities for scholarship money to study abroad, be careful when searching. Any scholarship that requires you to pay a large processing fee may not be legitimate. These Scholarships may be used in conjunction with other grants/awards.
