Discipline and Adjudication for Global Perspectives Trips
(Adaptation from NAFSA: Association of International Educators)
Discipline on Trips
The frontline of effective review and change in this area is the responsibility of the Trip Director. Global Perspectives trips are offered through Lee University and are therefore subject to the behavioral standards of Lee University. During pre-departure orientations and as the program progresses, Trip Directors should outline for student participants clear and concise behavioral expectations and consequences for misconduct. Directors are expected to enforce a zero tolerance policy for community covenant violations. Trip Directors have the authority to address acts of personal misconduct committed in country especially if it undermines the security of the program or the integrity of the education process, or poses a serious threat to self or others.
In the event of an incident abroad that involves academic or behavioral misconduct of a student, directors should inform their department chair immediately. In the most severe cases where dismissal is a consideration, consultation with the Academic Dean, Dean of Students, and Vice President for Academic Affairs should take place prior to taking action.
The Lee University Student Life Standard of Conduct describes detailed responsibilities and governing principles of students and is available at http://www.leeuniversity.edu/studentlife/standard-of-conduct.aspx.
Prior to departure, students are required to complete the Agreement, Release, and Waiver which communicates that misconduct will not be tolerated:
Participant agrees to and will be responsible for full compliance to the Lee University Student Life Standard of Conduct during all program activities/travel. As a representative of Lee University and our Lord, Jesus Christ, during the cross-cultural experience, participant realizes the importance of compliance with all standards of conduct found in Scripture and agrees to adhere fully while participating in the trip. Behaviors that violate the Standard of Conduct which will be defined at the discretion of the Trip Director will be countered with immediate trip dismissal, forfeit of fees paid, billing of costs incurred for the trip, loss of trip course credit and any trip costs incurred prior to the violation, and the added expense of return airfare and any additional costs incurred as a result thereof).
Adjudication
As outlined in the Safety and Behavioral Standards Policy and Contract, behaviors that violate the Lee University Standard of Conduct and/or that are illegal or immoral can and should be dealt with by Trip Directors and administrators in any or all of the following ways:
- Return the student to the United States, billing the cost to the student’s account.
- Fail the student in some or all of the courses on the trip.
- Report the student’s behavior to The Office of Student Life and the Dean of Students for disciplinary action.
Trip Directors opting to suspend a student from his/her program will be responsible for returning the student to the Atlanta airport. The parent or Alan McClung will then be responsible for meeting the student there and making further arrangements.
Any incurred expenses that result should be paid with the Trip Directors personal funds/credit card and the costs will be transferred to the student’s bill shortly after their return.
Upon return to campus, documented disciplinary infractions should be reported to the Dean of Students Office and become part of the student’s official record. Issues discovered post-return should be dealt with in the same manner.
Forms found on the following pages include a Health and Safety Precautions instruction page, a Travel Advisory Memo sample, and an Emergency Toll Free Line Protocol.
