Deciding on a Major
Deciding
It's normal to come to college without having a specific
major in mind. Many first and second year students
are undecided about their major. And, many
students who declare a major in the first year of
college change majors multiple times before they graduate.
Being undecided gives you the opportunity to explore, ask
questions, and expand your general knowledge through
core classes. You are free to consider many
options, to dream and brainstorm many possibilities.
This is also a prime time of self-discovery, and the
Center for Calling & Career provides you with many tools
for
self-assessment.
You are a unique person, created by God with special
strengths, abilities, and passions. As you learn and grow in
your knowledge of God's world and as you develop your
skills through a variety of learning opportunities, your
university experience will also help you understand
yourself better.
Here are some steps to consider in this important
process of deciding on a major:
Steps to take to choose a major
- Review
Lee's catalog to find majors that might
interest you, noting course requirements and
prerequisites.
- Visit the website "What can I do with this
Major?"
- Browse through the Campus Bookstore textbook
section to get a feel for what a particular class
will be studying. Look for areas of interest.
- Take an introductory course or an elective
course to learn more about a particular discipline.
- Be a successful, motivated learner. Good
grades will help keep the doors of opportunity open.
- Get involved in volunteer work through the
Leonard Center. This experience may help you
identify an area of interest and passion.
- Take the
StrengthsFinder. This
self-assessment is available through the Gateway 101
class or through the Center for Calling & Career
at a discounted rate.
- Meet with a Strengths Vocational Advisor.
This faculty advisor can talk with you about your
StrengthsFinder results and help you focus on what
you are really interested in doing.
- Talk with students in the majors you are
considering.
- Interview people who have jobs that are
appealing to you.
- And when you are ready, come to the
Center for
Calling & Career to declare or change your major.
- Make an appointment with a Career Counselor to
discuss one-on-one your educational and/or career
choices.
Whatever you do, don't be discouraged. Live the
questions. Seek the answers. The CC&C
is here to help you in this important process. We
believe that you are God's work of art, intentionally
designed with divine purpose in mind.
For I know the plans I have for you," declares the
Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans
to give you hope and a future."
