A native of Dallas, Texas, violist Megan Chisom began studying the violin at the age of six in a public school Suzuki strings program. Since agreeing to “try on” the viola at the age of twelve, she has performed across the United States as a chamber and orchestral musician. Currently, she is a member of the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera, where she is also music librarian. In recent years, Megan has performed as chamber music artist-in-residence at Piedmont College, principal viola of the Spartanburg Philharmonic, and as a member of the Greenville Symphony Orchestra, in addition to serving on the faculty of Erskine College as instructor of violin and viola. She joined the faculty of Lee University in the Fall of 2015 as instructor of viola and chamber music.

A passionate teacher, Megan is trained in the Suzuki method and maintains an active private studio, where she enjoys working with violin and viola students of all levels and ages. A strong advocate of an analytical approach to practice and learning, her doctoral research culminated in a complete performer’s guide to Bartók’s Concerto for Viola and Orchestra, which includes original etudes and exercises designed to guide violists through the process of learning the work. Megan is also trained as a music therapist, and sees the immeasurable value in music that exists outside the performance venue; she has worked in clinical settings throughout Northeast Georgia with various populations in both group and individual applications, and takes pride in applying insight gained from these diverse experiences to her teaching.

Megan is a frequent collaborator in chamber music performances throughout the Southeast, and maintains an active solo and orchestral performance schedule. In 2011, she toured Italy as principal viola of the ARCO Chamber Orchestra, an ensemble with which she has recorded extensively on the Phoenix USA label. She has appeared in viola masterclasses with artists including Paul Neubauer, Victoria Chiang, Igor Sulyga, Donald McInnes, and Timothy Deighton, and in chamber music masterclasses with Arnold Steinhardt, Anton Nel, and members of the Tokyo, Parisii, Ebène, and Miró String Quartets.

Megan is a graduate of Interlochen Arts Academy. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree in viola performance from the University of Texas at Austin, and Master’s and Doctoral degrees in viola performance from the University of Georgia, with a doctoral minor in music theory. Her principal teachers include Maggie Snyder, Mark Neumann, John Largess, and Roger Myers.
