    Born in South Korea, New Zealand pianist Joohae Kim began learning the piano at the age of three. Dr. Joohae Kim studied piano performance at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, and completed her Bachelor and Masters degrees with first class under the guidance of the world leading pedagogue Dr. Rae de Lisle. In 2008, she received an invitation to study at Florida State University to complete her Doctorate of Music in Piano Performance, under Dr. Read Gainsford, with research emphasis on four New Zealand piano preludes from 12 Landscape Preludes. She later made her debut at the Carnegie Hall performing these works in 2012.

    Dr. Kim’s performances have earned numerous prizes in major piano competitions, including Kerikeri Piano Competition, Kapiti Coast National Piano Competition, and Christchurch National Piano Concerto Competition. As a soloist, she collaborated with Magnolia Chamber Orchestra, Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, and Bach Musica Chamber Orchestra of New Zealand. Dr. Kim’s recitals and concerto performances have been recorded and broadcasted by Radio New Zealand and Concert FM Radio for the Young New Zealand series. She was invited as a Collaborative Guest Artist in Whitehead Hall, Valdosta State University, Southeastern Louisiana University, Tulane University, Jones County Junior College, and Loyola University. In 2014, her piano trio, ‘Lumineux’ was invited to give performances and master-classes at the music festival in Te Anau, New Zealand. As a chamber musician, Dr. Kim collaborated with renowned international musicians including Felix Wang, Michael Strauss, William Campbell, Jonas Thomas, David Requiro, Roger Myers, and Jesús Castro-Balbi.

    Joohae is an active teacher in her field. For her achievements in both teaching and performing piano, she was awarded the University of Auckland Blues Awards for Achievement in Music in Piano Performance. She is also a recipient of Miss Willa Chapman Award from the Rotary Club of Tallahassee. Dr. Kim served as a Collaborative Faculty Artist at the University of Southern Mississippi. She recently joined the Music Department of Lee University to teach Applied Piano and Class Piano sequences and to continue performing as a solo/collaborative artist. Outside her musical career, Joohae loves to take long walks and to travel with her husband Jonathan.
