French Horn Instructor
Gordon James, Principal Horn with the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera, presently serves as an Adjunct Faculty member at the University of TN at Chattanooga, Southern Adventist University in Collegedale, TN, Covenant College on Lookout Mtn., GA, and Lee university in Cleveland, TN.

Gordon grew up in a suburb of Dallas, Texas, as a member of a musical Norwegian family, who performed together as a folk band playing music from Norway, Europe, and the USA. While in High School, Gordon played Horn in the Band and Orchestra, and was twice selected to play with the top All-State Orchestra in Texas. During his senior year, Gordon won the Wind and Brass division of the Richardson Symphony Young Artist Competition, honored with a cash prize and live performance as soloist with the RSO.

Mr. James received a Bachelor of music Performance from the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore, Maryland, and a Master of Music Performance from the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas. While attending North Texas, he served as Principal Horn of the Richardson Symphony. He then left his position in Richardson to play 4th Horn with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. After graduating form North Texas, Gordon continued playing in the Fort worth Symphony and freelancing as a musician in the Dallas/kFt. Worth area for several years. In 1987, Gordon began playing with the Horn section of the Chattanooga Symphony & Opera, the SAU Orchestra, and the SAU Wind Ensemble. As a member of the CSO, Gordon performs Classical, Opera, Pops, and Chamber music. He also performs recitals, lecture/demonstrations, and Children’s Concerts at several area schools with his fellow musicians in the CSO Wind Quintet.

As an educator, Gordon has continually taught Fr. Horn for over 20 years. He enjoys teaching music students of all ages; beginners, intermediates, and advanced. His goals as a Horn teacher include preparing aspiring musicians and educators for a career in Music, as well as encouraging all students to continue their musical growth through membership in Community Bands, Orchestras, and area Churches. He hopes that all of his students acquire a taste for Classical music, support all types of music in their community, and pass their love for good music on to their children, family, and friends.
