Admission Requirements

Each applicant must meet the following criteria:

1. Each applicant must complete and submit:

  • the Graduate Studies in Music Application for Admission
  • a resume’
  • Three recommendations including at least one from a professional who has knowledge of your teaching ability (principals, mentors, supervisors, other teachers, practice teaching supervisor) and one from a professional with knowledge of your musicianship (undergraduate professor, other teacher, supervisor).
  • the Lee University Health Clinic Certificate of Immunization
     

2. Submission of official transcript(s) verifying completion of an undergraduate degree from a regionally accredited institution, including state certification in Music Education.

3. Minimum grade point average of 2.75. If the applicant has a GPA less than 2.75, the student may petition for admission on the basis of experience as a full-time music educator for a cumulative period of not less than three years. Action on this petition
will be determined by the Music Graduate Committee.

4. Completion of an interview with an appointed committee.

5. Three-to-four page essay, including:
   a. Rationale to study at Lee University.
   b. Description of applicant’s background in music.
   c. Statement of applicant’s professional goals.
   d. Discussion of ways applicant believes he/she will contribute to the Music Education profession.

6. A video tape from ONE of the following settings:

 

Secondary Choral or Instrumental specialization

i. Submit a video-tape of a typical class/rehearsal period of no less than 45 minutes. The tape should include a clear demonstration of the applicant conducting as well as rehearsal techniques (pedagogical aspects). The applicant may include 1-2 pages of a narrative giving additional information regarding the taped rehearsal as well as the lesson-plan

General music specialization

i. Submit a video-tape with a minimum of 20 minutes of teaching for each of two
grade levels or for two different lessons (class periods). The lessons should
include at least one demonstration of singing with children. Lesson plans for
the video-taped sessions should be included with the tape submission.

Post-baccalaureate teacher certification (requiring additional coursework and practice teaching) can be pursued simultaneously with the MUSED.MM. Post-baccalaureate requirements must be completed prior to completion of the MUSED.MM degree. When done in conjunction with the MUSED.MM, post-baccalaureate certification will generally require a minimum of two years of full-time study. The post-baccalaureate option is not available in the Summers Only program. If the applicant holds an undergraduate degree with licensure in an area other than music, conditional acceptance may be granted after analysis of transcripts, placement auditions, and examinations have been completed and remedial courses have been assigned. Prerequisite to full acceptance is the successful completion of the required remediation. No more than 12 hours of graduate courses may be completed before all deficiencies are removed.

Placement Exams

Following acceptance into the degree program, each applicant for the Master of Music – Music
Education degree will take Music Placement Examinations in music theory and music history.
Applicants will also complete an assessment of keyboard skills. Placement exams are administered through the Graduate Music Office and, in order to be advised, must be completed prior to initial enrollment. If any deficiencies are detected, specific remedial courses may be recommended or required. An examination packet is available upon request from the Director of Graduate Studies in Music.
  1. The Music Theory Placement Examination will include such areas as:                  

     

    a. Melodic harmonization
    b. Figured-bass realization
    c. Formal and harmonic analysis
    d. Melodic and harmonic dictation
    e. Sight-reading
                                       
  2. Based on the Music Theory Placement Examination, the student will be advised to:
    1) enroll in MUST 522 – Concepts of Analysis or 2) enroll in MUST 500 – Music Theory Review and receive a passing grade. MUST 500 does not receive credit towards graduation.
     
  3. The Music History Placement Examination will include recognition of works, composers, and        performance practices from the Renaissance through contemporary periods.

    Based on the Music History Placement Examination, the student will be advised to: a. enroll in the MUHL 512 – Performance Practice in the History of Music or b. enroll in the MUHL 500 Special Topics; Music History Review class. MUHL 500 Special Topics: Music History Review does not receive credit towards graduation.
     
  4. The Assessment of Keyboard Skills will determine: No additional keyboard study required.
    OR Applied keyboard study each semester until proficiency level is achieved. Specific keyboard placement criteria for Instrumental, Choral, or General Music specialists are available upon request from the Office of Graduate Music.
     

Completion Requirements

  1. A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above (on a 4.0 scale) is required in the graduate program. Course credits with a grade below a “C” will not be counted toward the degree.
     
  2. A student is admitted to candidacy for the Master of Music – Music Education degree only after the completion of 30 hours of course work and the successful completion of the portfolio and oral exam.
     
  3. Students must successfully complete a Final Project, which may be one of two thesis options or
    a project based on a specific topic of focus in the student’s program. The student will make a public presentation of the completed Final Project no less than three weeks prior to graduation.
     
  4. Students must meet all university-established deadlines for graduation.
     
  5. If a student has completed all course work but must still complete either the oral exam and/or
    Final Project, enrollment in MUSG 500 – Degree Completion or in another course of the student’s
    choice is required until all degree requirements are met.
  6. The degree must be completed within six years from initial enrollment in the degree program.
