    Terry Cross, PhD
    Professor of Systematic Theology

Cross joined Lee’s faculty in 1997, where he currently serves as the Dean for Lee’s School of Religion. Prior to his work at Lee, Cross served as a pastor in Ohio, New Jersey, and Connecticut, as well as a high school teacher. He has been listed in Who’s Who Among American Teachers and won Lee University’s Excellence in Teaching Award in 2000. He received his PhD in Systematic Theology from Princeton Theological Seminary. Cross is also an Ordained Bishop with the Church of God (Cleveland, TN). For nine years, he served as a Pentecostal representative in ecumenical dialogue at the Faith and Order Commission in the National Council of Churches of Christ (USA).

Among areas of academic research interest, Cross has focused attention on the theology of a Swiss theologian, Karl Barth. Since 2007, he has worked with a translation group at Princeton for the purpose of translating Barth's three-volumes of Conversations (1959-1968) from German to English. He has been a Translation Fellow at the Center for Barth Studies in Princeton since 2009. In addition, Cross' other research areas include the Reformation, ecclesiology, Pentecostal Theology, and the history of Christian doctrine. He is a member of the Karl Barth Society of North America and also the Society for Pentecostal Studies (where he was president in 2008).

Cross’ publications include co-editing a Festschrift—The Spirit and the Mind—for his former Lee professor, Dr. Donald N. Bowdle (University Press of America, 2000), which brought together more than 20 authors to write in areas of their disciplines. The following year he produced a revision of his dissertation entitled Dialectic in Karl Barth’s Doctrine of God (Peter Lang, 2001). In 2002, he wrote a small book in conjunction with a Lilly Fund project at the university entitled Answering the Call in the Spirit: Pentecostal Reflection on a Theology of Vocation, Work, and Life (Lee University Press, 2007), which explores the dimensions of calling with particular interest in the university setting. Cross has contributed chapters to several books including one in Karl Barth and the Future of Evangelical Theology (Cascade Books, 2014) and Paul Tillich and Pentecostal Theology: Spiritual Presence and Spiritual Power (Indiana University Press, 2014). Currently, Cross is completing a book on ecclesiology entitled, The Church: A People of God’s Presence and Power. Since 2010, Cross has also been working on a three-volume text entitled A History of Christian Doctrines, which traces the major loci of theology through various theologians throughout history. In 2001 he won Lee University’s Excellence in Scholarship Award.

Cross and his wife, Linda, have one daughter, Tara, who is married to Kevin Snider. A few years ago, Cross became a grandfather to Luke, who increasingly has become the focus of his attention in his spare time, aside from golf. Cross also enjoys genealogy and Latin.
