    Dr. Laura Singletary, an Assistant Professor of Mathematics, earned her PhD in Mathematics Education from the University of Georgia as a Presidential Graduate Fellow. She teaches mathematics and mathematics education courses, including Calculus, History of Mathematics, Foundations of Geometry, and Teaching Mathematics and Science Grades 6-12. She actively engages in research, and her current research focuses on how mathematics teachers support students in making their thinking and reasoning part of the classroom discourse. Dr. Singletary has published research in such publications as Educational Studies in Mathematics, Mathematical Thinking and Learning, Mathematics Teacher Educator, and Mathematics Teacher. She has been involved in multiple grant projects that provide professional development for middle and secondary mathematics teachers in the region, and she currently co-directs the Mentoring Mathematicians in the Making program at Lee, a mentorship program that connects high school students to undergraduate mathematics mentors.

    Dr. Singletary engages her students in research through the History of Mathematics course. Her students have presented their research at regional and national conferences. In addition, Dr. Singletary’s students have received first and second place awards for a national contest for undergraduate History of Mathematics expository research papers sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America’s History of Mathematics Special Interest Group. One of these papers was later published in Convergence, a journal for the history of mathematics.
