School of Music to Host Honor Choir, Concert

Lee University will host approximately 160 students, representing 15 high school choirs throughout eastern Tennessee and northern Georgia, to participate in the annual Honor Choir on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 8-9. Over the course of the weekend, students will rehearse a variety of choral works in preparation for their performance on Saturday at 3 p.m. in the Conn Center.

The students, who have been recommended by their high school choral directors, will form three choirs. There will be Women’s Choir, conducted by Dr. William Green, and Men’s Choir, conducted by Dr. Joshua Cheney. These two choirs will also combine into a larger, mixed choir.

“I'm so thankful that Lee University offers this amazing opportunity for students to come together to experience the joy that is singing in an honor choir,” said Tina Holcombe, director of the Hilger Higher Learning Choir and Chattanooga Home School Band. “The conductors from Lee are outstanding and so very kind to the students which makes the entire weekend memorable As a choral music educator, I love for my students to be under the direction of another conductor who will reinforce the concepts of good vocal technique.”

The Men’s and Women’s choirs will each perform three pieces selected by their conductors. The combined choir will perform two additional pieces, one chosen by each conductor.

In addition to the three honor choirs, Lee University’s Choral Union and Chorale will perform at the Saturday concert. These choirs are the required ensembles for all vocal music majors at Lee, and their performance will showcase the school’s accomplishments in choral music.

Green serves as the dean of the Lee University School of Music, where he oversees a variety of graduate and undergraduate music programs. He conducts the Festival Choir and Chorale, as well as teaching graduate conducting. Green is currently active as a guest conductor, adjudicator, and clinician. He has worked with choirs nationally and internationally, most recently in Georgia, Alabama, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, and South Carolina.

Cheney is an assistant professor of choral music at Lee University. He teaches conducting, choral rehearsal techniques, and choral literature and manages the graduate choral conducting program. In addition to teaching, Cheney conducts Choral Union and the new Men’s Choir. Cheney is currently a member of the Atlanta-based professional choral ensemble, Coro Vocati.

Saturday’s concert will be free, non-ticketed, and open to the public.
