Lee University Theatre will welcome Tanglewood Marionettes on Monday, Sept. 11 for a special performance of Sleeping Beauty. The show will take place in Lee’s Dixon Center at 7 p.m.

This retelling of the classic fairy tale will feature a painted storybook, as well as handcrafted marionettes brought to life by master puppeteers.

“We are thrilled to welcome back Tanglewood Marionettes,” said Dr. Christine Williams, associate professor of theatre at Lee. “They visited our campus several years ago and were a wonderful addition to our season. This is a great family-friendly experience and a terrific way to introduce children to the arts.”

The production will begin with a brief demonstration on the art of puppetry. The audience will learn about the different types of puppets.

Founded in 1993, Tanglewood Marionettes is based in New England, but tours nationally. The company is the recipient of two UNIMA awards, which honors excellence in puppetry.

The show is funded in part by a grant contract with the State of Tennessee through the Tennessee Arts Commission.

Tickets are $5 for all ages and will be available to purchase beginning Sept. 4 from 3-6 p.m. in the Communication Arts Building Box Office and one hour before the performance at the Dixon Center Box Office. The box office can be reached by calling (423) 614-8360 or emailing theatre@leeuniversity.edu.
