Chorale and Choral Union to Present “Songs from the Reformation”

Lee University’s Chorale and Choral Union will hold a joint concert, “Songs from the Reformation,” on Tuesday, March 21, at 7:30 p.m. in Pangle Hall.

The evening will include joint and separate performances from both choirs, featuring songs from the Protestant Reformation period.

The choirs will combine for a special performance, conducted by Dr. William F. Green, of a Bach cantata based on Martin Luther’s hymn “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God.” This will not only include both choirs, but also a student orchestra and several School of Music faculty solos featuring Ron Brendel, Lenena Brezna, Tony Deaton, and Andrea Dismukes. Dr. Cho-Eun Lee will perform on the harpsichord and Mary Beth Wickes on the organ.

The audience will also be invited to sing “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God,” arranged by Dan Forrest.

Other music for the evening includes “The Doxology,” arranged by Ralph Vaughan Williams, which many churches worldwide have adopted into their repertoire. The song comes from Calvinist traditions of the Protestant Reformation. The piece will feature students on brass.

Choral Union will then present “Give Me Jesus,” arranged by Lee music professor John Wykoff.

The night will feature music for the organ, based on musical themes also by Martin Luther, presented by faculty organist Evangeline Wykoff.

Choral Union, directed by Dr. Jonathan Rodgers, an assistant professor of choral music, performs choral music and major masterworks for mixed chorus and orchestra. The ensemble is a unique blend of Lee music and non-music majors.

Chorale, directed by Green, dean of the School of Music, is an ensemble of select vocalists. The group places an emphasis on the diversity and breadth of traditional choral literature and has been featured in performances at Carnegie Hall and throughout Europe.

The concert is a free, non-ticketed event, and it is open to the public. Pangle Hall is located on the corner of Church Street and Central Avenue.
