Symphonic Band to Present Spring Concert Wednesday

Symphonic Band 2017

Lee’s Symphonic Band will perform under Dr. Mark Bailey, conductor and professor of music, on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 7:30 p.m. in the Conn Center.

The ensemble will present an eclectic concert of band classics, which will include several selections from the worship music repertoire the band regularly presents in churches across the United States.

Selections from the new Benson Orchestra series arranged by Lee alum Mason Brown will be performed, as well as works by Robert Jager, Claude T. Smith, Ralph Vaugh Williams, and Lee University’s own Dr. David Holsinger, conductor of Lee’s Wind Ensemble.

Three local churches will join Symphonic Band for the final two numbers of the night: the Westwood Baptist Choir directed by Bruce Hill, The Ministry Center Choir directed by Lee alum Renee Higgins Talley, and The East Chattanooga Choir directed by Ty Parker.

The Symphonic Band has performed at churches across the country and at conferences such as the Christian Instrumentalists and Directors Association National Conference and the Atlanta Instrumental Expo Conference, the largest instrumental church music conference in America. It has also performed at numerous music festivals, appeared on television and radio, headlined important university events, and toured 14 foreign different nations around the world. The band recently completed a successful tour in Florida in fall 2016 and is scheduled to visit the Philippines this May.

The 2017 Lee University Symphonic Band consists of 56 musicians, several having participated in former all-state and all-regional bands, and has a reputation as an outstanding performance ensemble with superior musicianship.

“As the conductor, I am constantly amazed at how these young people are used in ministry, whether in a concert hall, a church service, or playing with students in a school setting,” said Bailey.

The evening’s performance, emceed by Lee music professor Dr. Ron Brendel, is a free, non-ticketed event open to the public.

The concert will be available for live stream viewing and will also be recorded by Arts Laureate. The recording will be available following the concert.
